The Old Fags Club

This coffee always gives a chuckle
El Toucan
And thoughts of Sam
His multi hued rainbow
Sugar sweet cereal ads enticed us
Follow your nose…

May we sit here, beside you?
Of course, a brief glance from The Globe
His partner pulls two chairs over
There will be eleven
And then helps him into the seat beside me
A loving glance, a pat on the arm

Tell me of your music
And I tell him of Rodriguez
Of Searching for Sugar Man
And South Africa
Of beautiful loving daughters
And discordant realities

Wow, that is deep.
I miss Diana Ross
She was always best with The Supremes
Filled a gown like a woman should
And she shimmied like a leaf in wind
I miss Diana Ross

Partner returns, a knowing look
Love
A glance to me
His mind is not always with us
But he is and I love him still
All memories and him

Seven more join us
The Globe will have to wait
A flamboyance has entered
Bright coloured sweaters and checkered shorts and sailing shoes
Offset by grey hair
And beautiful tans and perfect bright white teeth

Rafe brings the coffees
A glance to me
These men are the only ones he ever serves at tableside
Once per week
They reward him with bright smiles
And thanks

Are you expecting another
All coffees are served save the empty chair
No
A quizzical glance is all it takes
That seat is for the Dead Old Fags
The friends who have cleared the way before us

Screw ‘em says bird man, the senior
We did when they were here
And a boisterous laughter becomes the epitaph
To the men who cleared the way before
I miss Diana Ross
Caring glances, likely he is next says bird man

What are you drinking?
Coffee, El Toucan
Ah same as all us, the coffee of fags
Follow your nose and welcome to our club
The Old Fags Club
Don’t think we haven’t seen you here before (wink)

Flattery will get you most places
From me it will secure my thanks
And appreciation
And I hope you don’t mind this token straight
A nod to the rest of us
And yes I love you guys

Drink up gentlemen
And the rest of you
We have a straight with us, and it is good
Now if we could dress him properly
And get him these wee things we call dogs
All would be right in the world

I love Diana Ross
So do I, a beautiful voice
“One Shining Moment”, that was her best
Tell me more of your music
The discordant life of Rodriguez
A moment of cognizance, surrounded by faces of delight
